What is Bright Future for Young Mothers Canada?
Bright Future for Young Mothers Canada (BFYMC) is a Canadian based non-profit that aims to empower young, adolescent mothers in Tanzania. We provide shelter, food, healthcare, and other basic necessities, as well as a nurturing environment to help these young girls create a brighter future for themselves and their families. Read more about our Mission and Objectives.
At the moment, BFYMC is focused on distributing healthcare packages for young mothers and their children. In addition to everyday essentials such as malaria prevention items, medications, infant care items, and clothing, they also contain obstetrics kits for women who decide to have deliveries at home. These obstetrics kits are vital for young women who are pregnant; they reduce the risk of serious infections that can lead to child and/or maternal death. In addition, we follow up after the child is born to ensure that the child is healthy and well-nourished.
How does BFYMC create brighter futures?
In developing nations, futures are rarely bright. For young women, the outlook is especially dim. Economic and social marginalization, high illiteracy rates, chaotic family structures and sexual trafficking are among many challenges currently facing adolescent girls in Tanzania. The most critical concern is maternal/infant death during childbirth. Limited economic, work and livelihood opportunities lead young girls to leave school early and to engage in sexual activities for money in order to buy basic items for their families. Living in abject poverty, these girls’ attempts to make ends meet often lead to unwanted pregnancies. Poor, illiterate and pregnant, these young girls face a dire future. BFYMC provides a nurturing environment where young girls are empowered and taught skills to create a better future for themselves and their children. We offer shelter, healthcare, education to young (often adolescent) mothers and their infants so that they can return to their communities as healthy, educated, and self-sufficient individuals.
